Createpreneur Africa Spotlight: Mwandale Mwanyekwa – Big Mama
From the coastal rhythms of Bagamoyo to the global stages of Venice, Stockholm, and Changchun, Mwandale Mwanyekwa, affectionately known as Big Mama, embodies the spirit of African sculptural heritage reimagined for the contemporary world.

A fifth-generation sculptor from the Makonde tribe, Big Mama carries forward a lineage of women artisans whose mastery of clay, wood, and stone has shaped cultural memory for centuries. Her maternal ancestors were carpenters and sculptors, and today she honors their legacy by blending traditional Makonde forms with modern innovation.
Founder of Women Art Creators NGO and owner of Big Mama’s Woodworks, she works across mediums, wood, stone, bronze, steel, clay, and cement casting. Her creations are monumental, poetic, and deeply rooted in African identity.
Her works have been commissioned and celebrated by institutions such as the Danish Embassy, Oxfam, Ramada Resort, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tanzania. They stand proudly in global spaces:
- Museum of Ethnography, Stockholm
- World Sculpture Park, Changchun, China
- Vergnacco Sculpture Park, Venice, Italy
- Ministry of Culture, Libreville, Gabon

Her journey spans exhibitions and workshops across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the USA. From ARESUVA in Abuja to World Wood Day in Austria and Cambodia, Big Mama’s artistry is a bridge—connecting cultures, histories, and futures.
Beyond her sculptures, she is a visionary advocate for women in art, amplifying voices and nurturing creativity through her NGO.
Her work is not only about form and material, but about empowerment, heritage, and resilience.
Big Mama’s story is a testament to the power of art as legacy, innovation, and empowerment. She is not just sculpting materials — she is sculpting futures.
